PG138 Fog on the Barrows Downs Cold be hand and heart and bone, and cold be sleep under stone, never more to wake on stony bed, Never till sun fails and the moon is dead. In the black wind the stars shall die and still on gold here let them lie , till the dark lord lifts his hand over the dead sea and withered land . The Barrow wrights that caught the hobbits. Tom Bombadil comes to the rescue ! Get out , you Wright ! Vanish in the sunlight ! Shrivel like the cold mist , like the winds go wailing , Out into the barren lands far beyond the mountains ! Lost and forgotten be, darker than darkness , Where gates stand for ever shut till the world is mended. To wake Merry Pippin and Sam Wake now my merry lads! Wake and hear me calling ! Warm now be heart and limb ! The cold stone is fallen, Dark door is standing wide, dead hand is broken Night under Night is flown and the Gate is open! PG 153 At the Sign of the Prancing Pony Where the hobbits meet Strider for the first time " I am called Strider he said in a low voice " I am very pleased to meet you , Master____ Underhill if old Butterbur go your name right. " " He did " said Frodo stiffly . He felt rather uncomfortable under the stare of those keen eyes. PG 163 Strider Frodo has just meet Strider for the second time in Frodo 's room" Why the disguise ? Who are you ? What do you really know about my business and how do you know about it ?" PG167 Strider A letter to Frodo from Gandalf introducing Stider" All that is gold does not glitter Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither , Deep roots are not reached by the frost From ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall be spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken ; the crownless again shall be king.PG 168 Strider " But I am the real Strider, fortunately , he said looking down on them with his face softened by a sudden smile." Readers are re-introduced to Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf and the RING !! Also introduced is Frodo Baggins, Bilbos nephew and heir ( who also gets the ring ). Bilbo goes away at the end of his birthday party and gives Frodo the RING ! Its seems evil is coming ! So Frodo, Sam ( his servant and best friend ) Merry and Pippin set out to with the Ring to destroy it ! There is only one way to destroy it. That is to find the Crack of Doom and throw the Ring in it. They go to Rivendell where Elrond Halfeven will help them ! Frodo, Sam, Pippin and Merry have many adventures on the way to Rivendell. There is Danger !! The Black Riders are after the Ring ! In the village of Bree they meet Strider. He is a very talented friend of Gandalf ! Strider is not only a Ranger but a king who is currently uncrowned ! One night the group is attacked by the Black Riders ! Frodo gets a poison dart in the shoulder ! Just when the Riders are about to get Frodo, some one saves Frodo by flooding the Ford and killing
the bad guys ! What happened to Frodo ? Is he alive ? Who flooded the Ford ? What about the rest of the hobbits and Strider ? Did they get to Rivendell ?

Elrond did the Flood there were many meetings as Frodo recovers in Rivendell. PG 240. The Council of Elrond Seek for the Sword that was broken. In Imladris it dwells, There shall be counsels taken Stronger than Morgul spellls, There shall be shown a token That doom is near at hand For Isildur Bane shall waken And the Halfing forth shall stand . " Pg264 " I will take the Ring" he said, though I do not know the way " Frodo The Ring goes South. pg 268, The Company is chosen " The Company of the Ring shall be Nine; and the Nine Walkers shall be set against the Nine Riders that are evil . With you and your faithful servant Gandalf will go ... the rest of the company shall represent the other Free Peoples of the World: Elves, Dwarfs and Men. Legolas shall be for the Elves; and Gimili son of Gloin for the Dwarfs.... For men you shall have Aragorn." Pippin Merry and Boromir also come. Summary of Book 2 : In Rivendell there Frodo recovers from his wound. He meets Elrond "Lord of Rivendell and mighty among both Elves and Men." There are many talks and the Ring Bearer is finally chosen. In his Company ( that go of their own free will ) are Frodo Sam Gandlf Legolas Gimli Strider ( Aragon ) Merry Pippin and Boromir Before Fodo goes Biblo gives him Sting ( sword ) and a dwarf mail coat to wear under his clothes. Many are the dangers that the Nine face! The deadest was at (in) Daeron's Runes While inside they are attacked and chased by Orcs ! Also a great thing a Bolrog attacks the group. After the others are across a bridge Gandlf stood on before the Balrog "You can not pass. I am the servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of Flame of Anor. You can not pass . The dark fire will not avail you flame of Vdun ". Go back to the Shadow ! You can not pass. " Aragorn and Boromir went back to help but to late !!! Gandlf defeated the Bolrog but as the bridge broke both he and the monster went down together ! The group fled to safety but at a high price.
At Amon Hen the group has to decide to " go West with Boromir and the wars of Gondor or turn east to the Fear and Shadow; or we break up our Fellowship and go this way and that as each may choose?" Frodo gets an hour to think and soon discovers that Boromir follows him to get the Ring. Meanwhile the others have decided to go with Frodo . Boromir comes back without Frodo. The group scatters looking for him. Gijmli and Legolas go in one direction Sam in another direction and Merry and Pippin go in to the trees. Strider tells Bormir to look after the young hobbits Merry and Pippin. Strider goes after Sam. Does Sam find Frodo ? What happens to the rest of the group ? Is there more danger and adventure to come ?

While the company is looking for Frodo ,the Orcs attack !!! Aragorn hears Boromir's horn" The horn of Boromir He is in need !" It's to late !! The Orcs killed him. His last words to Aragorn" They are gone; the Halflings the Orcs have them I think they are not dead. Orcs bound them"pg404.Aragorn makes a hard choice to go after Frodo or the hobbits. " I will follow the Orcs"pg 409. While following the Orc trail they find a clue that Pippin had dropped. " the brooch of an elven cloak cried Legolas and Gimli together. " I think Pippin ran away from the trail for that purpose." Aragorn.pg 414. Meanwhile Pippin and Merry are driven hard by the Orcs and goblins to Isengard . The Orcs are under orders not to hurt the hobbits. "The prisoners are NOT to be searched or plundered "... " alive and as captured , no spoiling :pg 436 .An evil goblin Grishnakh wants the RING. He takes the hobbits away to search and kill them . However he is killed by a Rider of the Rohan. Pippin and Merry escape in to the forest Fangorn. Unaware that the orcs were killed by Eomer (a good guy) and his men. While in the forest the young hobbits met Treebeard. " The Ent , I am you might say in your manner of speaking. Fangorn is my name according to some, Treebeard others make of it"pg 453. The Ents march to Isengard to destroy it. pg 474. " To Isengard ! Though Isengard be ringed and barred with doors of stone; Though Isengard be strong and hard , as cold as stone and bare as bone, we go to war , to hew though stone and break the door, For bole and bough are burning now, the furnace roars we go war ! To land of gloom with tramp of doom ,with roll of drum, we come, we come; To Isengard with doom we come ! with doom we come , with doom we come ! " So they sang as they marched southwards. " Meanwhile Aragorn Gimli and Legolas are reunited with Gandalf. Now Gandlf the White. "I am Saruman , one might say Saruman as he should have been.pg 484. " But where are the hobbits Legolas broke in " Where are they now ? " " With Treebeard and the Ents" said Gandalf. pf 487 488. Gandalf releases King Theoden from Wormtongue 's spell. ( Wormtongue is a bad person ) King Theoden calls his men to arms " Arise now , arise Riders of Theoden ! Dire deeds awake , dark is eastward Let horse be bridled , horn be sounded Forth Eorlings" " I myself will go to war , to fall in front of the battle if must be" . pgs 506 507. At Helm Deep there is a fierce battle with Orcs and goblin men. When all seems lost Gandalf comes to the rescue with a 1000 men on foot. " The White Rider was among them and his coming filled the enemy with madness... Like a black smoke driven by a mountain wind they fled.. passing under a waiting shadow of the trees and from the shadow none were ever came again."pg529. In Isengard the friends are reunited with Pippin and Merry, also Theoden meets hobbits for the first time. Gimli" ... A fine hunt you have led us ! Two hundred leagues though fen and forest, battle and death, to rescue you !" Theoden " It can not be doubted that we witness the meeting of dear friends.... so these are the lost ones of your company Gandalf."pg 544. Gandalf and company talk to Saruman and Wormtongue who are in a tower guarded by the Ents. Gandalf wants Saruman to turn to good but Saruman does not trust Gandalf ! Gandalf: Stay then.. I cast you from the Council. !" Worm tongue throws down a dark globe narrowly missing Gandalf. Treebeard and the Ents will guard Saruman ." Saruman shall not set foot beyond the rock with out my leave. Ents will watch over him"pg 572. Later as Gandalf lay asleep Pippin took the globe and was very frightened by what was inside it. Gandalf gave Aragorn the globe to use when he was ready for to use it. For Pippin safety Gandalf took him to Minas Tirith ahead of the others. So once again the company is parted.
