Gollum is after Frodo and Sam for the Ring. " Where iss it, where iss it : my Precious , my Precious ? It's ours, it is, and we wants it.... The thieves ...where are they with my Precious ? Curse them ! We hates them" pg 599. Frodo and Sam capture Gollum and Gollum takes them to Mordor or does he ? Gollum has other plans for the hobbits !! The hobbits met Faramir , Boromir' s brother. Faramir warns them of Gollum" .. beware of this guide, Smeogol . He has done murder before now. pg 678. On ward the hobbits travel and once past the Crossroads the weight of the RING begins to grow on Frodo. After climbing many stairs they came to Torech Ungol or Shelob's Lair. Gollum leaves them alone in a tunnel which way to go ? Sam urges Frodo to use the star glass " A light when all other lights go out".pg 704. They encounter Shelob a giant spider ! Frodo with Sting in one hand and the Phial in the other hand, faced down the spider and backed her into its den. Then Frodo and Sam encounter a spider web! Trying to escape the web Frodo uses Sting to cut though and sure enough he sees Cirith Ungol and knows the journey is almost over ! As Frodo was running to the exit Shelob struck Frodo !! Sam had his hands full of Gollum " Got him ! " hissed Gollum in his ear, At last, my precious We ' ve got him , yes , the nasty hobbit. We take this one, She 'll gett the other . O yes Shelob will get him,..." pg 709. Gollum was surprised by Sam's fighting and before Sam could use his sword Gollum ran away toward the tunnel. Then Sam went after the spider. After a hurtful battle the wounded spider went back to its den. Sam thinking that Frodo was dead took the Ring and Sting the sword to carry on the quest. He had not gone far when a company of Orcs came his way and Sam put the Ring on. The Orcs had seen Frodo and was carrying him off but Sam was to tired to catch them. The Orcs were putting Frodo in the top chamber. The Orc Shagrat had orders to keep the prisoner safe and intact. " The great doors slammed to . The bars of iron fell into place inside. The gate was shut. Sam was outside and Frodo was alive but in the hands of the Enemy." pg 725.

Gandalf and Pippin reach Minas Tirith. Here they met Denethor, Boromir's father. Pippin is sworn into the service of Denethor. So for a while Pippin is safe. While Aragornand his company go to Minas Tirith they met unexpected help from Aragorn 's kin from the North, fellow Rangers. Merry becomes the esquire to King Theoden. Once again the company parts, Merry goes with the King and his Riders to Minas Tirith and Aragorn to ride the Paths of the Dead. "We must ride our own road ,and no longer in secret.. I will ride east and take the Paths of the Dead."pg 762. It seems that there will be great trouble and downfall so to head it off Aragorn goes to the Path of the Dead. On their way they stop at Dunharrow where the Lady Eowyn awaits. She wants to go to but Aragorn says no. On they went ".. the Grey Company passed into the darkness of the storm of Mordor and were lost to mortal sight; but the Dead followed them "pg 773. Merry and Lady Eowyn were not to be left behind while the others go into battle. " Where will wants not, a way opens ,so we say.. You wish to go" said a young rider named Dernhelm ( really Eowyn) "I do " says Merry. Then you shall go with me. I will bear you before me under my cloak until we are to far a field." Thank you indeed said Merry. Pg 787. So off they set in to battle with darkness and the threat of war present. Faramir returns to Gondor and Denethor his father. As Faramir talked about his meeting with Frodo and Sam " Pippin know that Gandalf, Grandalf himself was troubled ,even afraid"pg 793. All hope seems lost because the enemy surrounds Gondor and the Riders of the Mark come though !! Faramir is hurt by a poison dart and is taken to the Tombs where dead kings are Denethor is determined to burn both of them alive. Pippin races to find Gandalf. When all seems lost the Riders of the Mark come " Ride now, Ride now ! Ride Gondor ! .... the hosts of Mordor wailed , and terror took them , and they fled , and died and the hoofs of wrath rode over them .."pg 820. They paid a very dear price ! for the King died in battle and Eowyn was hurt by the Black Rider. Just when the Black Rider was about to kill the girl Merry stabbed him in the back of the knee giving Eowyn time to kill the Black Rider. Merry to was hurt.. "as he struck his blow his arm was numbed."pg 826. Eomer now King of the Mark returned to battle".. swept past their fallen king ... roaring away south wards." pg 826. Once again the battle is going bad when Eomer sees a ship carrying Aragorn. " At length Eomer and Aragorn met in the midst of battle and they leaned on their swords and looked on one another and were glad. " Nor indeed more timely said Eomer. " You came none too soon , my friend. Much loss and sorrow has befallen us." " Then let us avenge it , ere we speak of it! " said Aragorn , and they rode back into battle together." pg 830. In the House of Healing Faramir Eowyn and Merry were healed by Aragorn. " The hands of the king are the hands of a healer."pg 842. The last battle takes place at the Black Gate. Before it begins a rider from the Dark Tower comes out, he is known as the Mouth of Sauron. To Gandalf Pippin ( Merry was to injured to come ) and the others of the company horror the Mouth of Sauron produced Frodo's coat of mail Sam's sword and Frodo's elven cloak. The Mouth of Sauron said either surrender or Frodo will be tormented forever in the Tower. Gandalf rejects the terms " These we take in memory of our friend ; he cried. " But as for your terms we reject them utterly. Get you gone , for your embassy is over and death is near you". Pg 872. " Sauron sprang his trap... orcs poured out in numerable ... the Men of the West were trapped " pg 873. Did Pippin, Gandalf and others die in battle ? What happened to Frodo and Sam ?

How was Sam going to get Frodo out of the Tower and out of the Orcs hands ? The Ring cause it was closer to where it was made was gaining in power and Sam was thinking of keeping it" it was the love of his master that helped most to hold him firm... also deep down in him was still unconquered his plain hobbit sense"pg 881. To get in the Front Gate Sam used the phial of Galadriel to get though. Once inside he noticed that the Orcs were fighting among themselves and there was many of their bodies around. Sam looked in all the rooms he could find but no Frodo ! Disappointed and sad he started singing childhood tunes and parts of Bilbo rhymes "... he stopped short . He thought he heard a faint voice answering him" pg 888. Frodo was in the top most chamber in the Tower reachable by ladder ! Quickly killing the Orc Sam found Frodo " He ran to the figure huddled on the floor. It was Frodo." pg 889. Sam warns Frodo that the Ring is very dangerous now that they are in Mordor. They escape by dressing themselves as Orcs and once again Sam uses the phial of Gadadriel to escape the front gate. " For the hobbits each day , was more bitter than before as their strength lessened ( hardly had food or water ) .. Sam guessed that Frodo's pains were the worst, growing weight of the Ring a burden on the body and a torment to his mind" pg 914. "So foot by foot they crept up the slope " pg 921. Suddenly on the last bend Gollum attacked Frodo !!! " Wicked masster ! he hissed. He musst n't go that way He musst 'nt hurt Precious . Give it to uss " pg 922. With fighting that surprised Sam and Gollum Frodo won " Be gone , and trouble me no more ! If you touch me ever again , you shall be cast yourself in to the Fire of Doom" pg 972. While Frodo went on Sam dealt with Gollum ! Gollum went running down the path after Sam gave him a warning. At the edge of the Crack of Doom Frodo claimed the Ring as his own ! " The Ring in is mine " and he put it on his finger and disappeared." Pg 924.
Then Gollum came up behind Sam and knocked him down and began fighting with an unseen Frodo. Gollum bites off Frodo's ring finger " My Precious ! O my Precious !... his eyes were lifted up to gloat at his prize, he stepped to far, toppled , wavered for a moment on the brink, and then with a shriek he fell ... came a last wail Precious , and he was gone " pg 925. Then the mountain erupted and Frodo was himself again. Mean while at the battle when " The Power that drove the enemy failed and the Man of the West won !! Frodo and Sam were rescued unconscious from a small hill by Gandalf and the eagles. When they came to they were " in the land of Ithilien and keeping of the king and he awaits you. " Gandalf to Sam pg 930. To the hobbits surprise Aragron "is the king of Gondor and Lord of the Western Lands .. has taken back all his ancient realm" pg 931. They were great heros " Long live the Halflings ! Praise them with great praise " pg 932. At the feast they see Merry and Pippin again " ..for the present Merry and I are busy ( at the feast ) We are knights of the City and of the Mark , as I hope you observe." Pg 934. They also met Legolas and Gimli again and have much to catch up on, so once again the Company is together. At Aragron's crowning he let Frodo carry the crown and Gandalf put it on him . " Be hold the king " Pg 947. The friends wait for Aragron to marry Arwen. " Aragorn the King Elessar wedded Arwen Undomiel in the City of the Kings upon the day of Midsummer" pg 951. After the wedding the Company went to Rohan for the burial of King Theoden , at the feast after the burial came the wedding announcement of Lady Eowyn to Faramir. At Isengard they learned that Treebead let Saruman and Wormtongue go ! " There was little left of him when he crawled out .. I kept my promise to keep him safe. But things have changed " pg 958. Treebead gave the keys of Orthanc to Aragron . It's here that Legolas and Gimli part company , they will go into Entland and see the trees and then go to their separate homes. Near the Gap of Rohan , Aragorn goes his way . At the foot of the Misty Mountains they met Saruman and Wormtongue on the road. He warns the hobbits that things are not right at home ! The people of Lorien take their leave and the group goes to Rivendell. At Rivendell the hobbits spend time with Biblo. After awhile the hobbits are ready to go the Shire. For Frodo on a certain day in October and March he will be in pain and sad but the next day he will feel better. Gandalf visits Bombadil " Good bye , dear friends ! Not for the last time , not yet . Good bye !" Well here we are, just the four of us, that started out together said Merry. We have left all the rest behind , on after the another." pg 974. Things were indeed bad at the Shire! It seems some one called the Chief has taken over ! " .. We 're going to clear out these ruffians , and their Chief too, we starting now" Sam to Cotton Farmer. pg 984. The hobbits won the battle and then went to meet their chief , who was surprise ... Saurman !! Frodo does not want Saruman killed " Go Saurman by the speediest way! " pg 995. In the end Wormtongue killed Saruman by cutting his throat ; Wormtongue was killed by hobbit arrows.
Things were rebuilt in the Shire , Sam married Rose Cotton and they lived with Frodo. Then one September Frodo gave all his things to Sam and told him to finish the book. Then they went on one last trip together. They met Elrond ,Galadriel and other elves and Bilbo too. They were going to the Havens. Sam wanted to go but not yet Frodo told Sam he will do many things be mayor, be a famous gardener and keep the memory alive. Gandalf " Well here at last , dear friends , on the shore of the Sea comes the end of our fellowship in Middle earth. Go in peace ! pg 1007. Frodo says good bye to Pippin Merry and Sam. On the boat was Gandalf Frodo Bilbo Elrond Galadriel and the elves. It went out in on the High Sea and passed in to the West; to Frodo it seems they sailed to a new country , to Sam he soon lost sight of the boat in the West. Merry and Pippin went back to Buckwood and Sam home to dinner.

At the back of the book is a list of Appendices that describe the background of the kings hobbits and so forth and so on.... It s very interesting !
